We All Can Serve! How Will You Commemorate 11-11-11?

If you’ve read any of my blog posts you know that I am an advocate for volunteerism and service.  I also have a special place in my heart for our military.  I am eternally grateful to those who protect our security and freedom. I am dedicating today’s post to highlight ways that we can support and honor United States military service members and veterans.

Veterans Day 2011 is almost here.  That’s right 11-11-11 is four days away.  There are countless opportunities to show your gratitude for our active military soldiers and veterans.  Below you will find a few examples to get you started.

  • Visit hospitals, rehabilitation centers, and nursing homes t
  • Give your time to a nonprofit organization that supports service members and veterans

Snail Mail

  • Create and send personalized care packages
  • Write and mail letters
  • Create and send greeting cards

  • Organize a monetary collection at your school, church, job or organization
  • Organize a fundraiser (event)
  • Buy or donate gift certificates
  • Donate a calling card to allow families can stay in touch

  • Spend your money with companies and organizations that support our military
  • Purchase authorized pre-made care packages

  • Halloween candy
  • Candy, cookies, nuts, popcorn
  • Books and movies

Military Families

  • Donate new stuffed animals and beanie babies to children of deployed service members
  • Become a mentor
  • Adopt a military family

  • Donate an unwanted vehicle
  • Donate old cell phones
  • Donate ink jet cartridges

Spread the word

  • Tell your friends and family about the sacrifices made by our military, veterans, and their families
  • Share the message through social media

Don’t Stop

  • Please don’t limit your service and support to holidays.  You can make a difference in the lives of service members, veterans, and their families all year long.

There are definitely other ways to get involved.  Take some time to do a bit of your own research to find ways to say thank you that fit your budget, lifestyle, location, and heart.
